What to Expect
With a background as an experienced art therapist, I help individuals find creative ways to become actively engaged with their growth and progress. I incorporate acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, an understanding of neuroscience and physiology, and mindfulness techniques to help you learn skills to better manage issues. Counseling can be hard work and often involves discomfort and change. It typically requires a willingness to accept where you are at and an openness to try new things.
What is Art Therapy
Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that incorporates art-making and other types of creative practices. It focuses on the process of art-making more than the final product; meaning you do not have to be experienced or "good" at art. Art-making allows for self-expression and externalization of concerns or problems, opportunities for new and unique insights into ourselves, and openings for creative problem-solving. Sometimes art-making makes certain topics easier to talk about as it is often a non-verbal form of communication. Making art can also be cathartic and feel good; it is a helpful tool for stress relief and managing emotions. We don't have to use art therapy techniques during counseling, in fact, many people prefer talk therapy. However, if you are interested in using art-making during sessions feel free to mention this during your initial consult. For more information about art therapy, check out the resources page.
